Twitter Plans to Go Beyond Its 140-Character Limit

Twitter Plans to Go Beyond Its 140-Character Limit:

nerdology:

People are talking about the thought of doubling the character limit to 280 or making it 300, but I like to think of an even weirder world where Twitter increased it just a little. Imagine if it went up by 3. Or 7?

If they’re going to arbitrarily increase the number I hope it’s something bananas. Either really small (2 or 3 more characters) or to something absurd like 327.

Twitter has been on the road to ditching the character limit for a while. In March of last year Twitter introduced multiple pictures in tweets for no additional character limit, and tagging users in photos (also for no additional character limit). I thought at the time that the next logical step was that links would be ‘free’ of the character count, but that hasn’t happened yet.

When twitter introduced the new “quote tweet” this year that links to existing tweets rather than copying a tweet directly it also served to save character count. It seems they’re trying hard to work around the character limit while still staying true to the number (one that is only significant to people using the service on SMS, like when it launched).

There is really something nice about the brevity of a tweet, and I think that longer tweets have the chance of breaking what makes the service so nice. It’ll be interesting to see what they do going forward.

This seems like a huge mistake, but hey, what do I know?
