I liked a photo on Instagram: “V / V

As my family continues to deal with the loss of my father last week, I find myself wondering how I’ll feel when I next pick up a camera, how I’ll see the world in this next chapter of life, and whether my drive to explore and share what I see will be replaced by something else, some other instinct. To run. To hide. To escape.

We still have weeks and months ahead of us to figure things out, for my mum, my brother and his family, and for me. It’s all unknown at the moment, nothing’s certain, but I trust that when the time comes, my gut will point me in the right direction again.

The instinct to run when uncomfortable is powerful — it comes from an ancient place, buried so deeply in our psyche as a survival mechanism that even when our lives aren’t actually threatened, we react as if the danger is real.

Facing those fears, pushing back against the false-instincts, is how we grow and learn the most.

thebeakerblog: Imagine you have a big bucket. And in that...

thebeakerblog:

Imagine you have a big bucket. And in that bucket you pack a bunch of soft, slightly-squishy tennis balls. For the sake of argument, we’ll say you threw in 128 of the little green spheres.

Still with me? Good. Now, imagine all the different ways you could arrange those balls within the bucket. If you think the number is near-infinite (in the non-literal sense) you’d be right. But that’s the key, it’s near infinite. With a powerful enough computer (or a lot of time), it’s conceivable you could count all possible configurations of those 128 balls.

Now, research published in the journal Physical Review E, claims to have done just that. It says 128 balls could be arranged 10^250 different ways – ten unquadragintilliard, a number bigger than our current estimate for the number of particles in the universe.

OK. So that’s cool. We found a really big number, but stick with me for a minute and let your imagination go nuts.

If you think about it, this calculation actually could open the door to some really amazing future knowledge. Presumably, with a powerful enough computer, one day we might be able to calculate all possible configurations of any granular system. Say, sand grains in a desert, or snow flakes on a mountain. If you think about it, one day, with enough raw computing power, could it be possible to predict sand dune formation? Or know, precisely, how an avalanche will move down a mountain?

I don’t understand the application of this, but cool, we did a thing and big numbers.

Thirty Years Ago, the Challenger Crew Plunged Alive and Aware to Their Deaths

Thirty Years Ago, the Challenger Crew Plunged Alive and Aware to Their Deaths:

liftoffpodcast:

NASA wanted to avoid discussions about astronaut safety and portray the Challenger disaster as a clean, “they died immediately” story. The truth is, the astronauts were alive, and probably conscious, for their three-minute plunge to the ocean surface, where they died of blunt force trauma. And had NASA planned for other ways to astronauts to survive an accident such as this, perhaps they could have survived. Even now, this story isn’t widely known.

I swear examiners decided that while death wasn’t instant, they likely burned/smoked to death…

materialsscienceandengineering:

Carbon dioxide captured from air can be directly converted into methanol fuel

For the first time, researchers have demonstrated that CO2 captured from the air can be directly converted into methanol (CH3OH) using a homogeneous catalyst. The benefits are two-fold: The process removes harmful CO2 from the atmosphere, and the methanol can be used as an alternative fuel to gasoline. The work represents an important step that could one day lead to a future “methanol economy,” in which fuel and energy storage are primarily based on methanol.

The study was led by G. K. Surya Prakash, a chemistry professor at the University of Southern California, along with the Nobel laureate George A. Olah, a distinguished professor at the University of Southern California. The researchers have published their paper on the CO2-to-methanol conversion process in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

“Direct CO2 capture and conversion to methanol using molecular hydrogen in the same pot was never achieved before. We have now done it!” Prakash told Phys.org.

Over the past several years, chemists have been investigating various ways of recycling CO2 into useful products. For example, treating CO2 with hydrogen gas (H2) can produce methanol, methane (CH4), or formic acid (HCOOH). Among these products, methanol is especially attractive because of its use as an alternative fuel, in fuel cells, and for hydrogen storage.

materialsscienceandengineering:

Nano-coating makes coaxial cables lighter

Scientists replace metal with carbon nanotubes for aerospace use

Common coaxial cables could be made 50 percent lighter with a new nanotube-based outer conductor developed by Rice University scientists.

The Rice lab of Professor Matteo Pasquali has developed a coating that could replace the tin-coated copper braid that transmits the signal and shields the cable from electromagnetic interference. The metal braid is the heaviest component in modern coaxial data cables.

The research appears this month in the American Chemical Society journalACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.

Replacing the outer conductor with Rice’s flexible, high-performance coating would benefit airplanes and spacecraft, in which the weight and strength of data-carrying cables are significant factors in performance.

Rice research scientist Francesca Mirri, lead author of the paper, made three versions of the new cable by varying the carbon-nanotube thickness of the coating. She found that the thickest, about 90 microns – approximately the width of the average human hair – met military-grade standards for shielding and was also the most robust; it handled 10,000 bending cycles with no detrimental effect on the cable performance.

materialsscienceandengineering: New chip fabrication...

materialsscienceandengineering:

New chip fabrication approach

Depositing different materials within a single chip layer could lead to more efficient computers.

Today, computer chips are built by stacking layers of different materials and etching patterns into them.

But in the latest issue of Advanced Materials, MIT researchers and their colleagues report the first chip-fabrication technique that enables significantly different materials to be deposited in the same layer. They also report that, using the technique, they have built chips with working versions of all the circuit components necessary to produce a general-purpose computer.

The layers of material in the researchers’ experimental chip are extremely thin — between one and three atoms thick. Consequently, this work could abet efforts to manufacture thin, flexible, transparent computing devices, which could be laminated onto other materials. “The methodology is universal for many kinds of structures,” says Xi Ling, a postdoc in the Research Laboratory of Electronics and one of the paper’s first authors. “This offers us tremendous potential with numerous candidate materials for ultrathin circuit design.”

The technique also has implications for the development of the ultralow-power, high-speed computing devices known as tunneling transistors and, potentially, for the integration of optical components into computer chips.

materialsscienceandengineering:

It’s a 3-D printer, but not as we know it

3D printing techniques have quickly become some of the most widely used tools to rapidly design and build new components. A team of engineers at the University of Bristol has developed a new type of 3D printing that can print composite materials, which are used in many high performance products such as tennis rackets, golf clubs and aeroplanes. This technology will soon enable a much greater range of things to be 3D printed at home and at low-cost.

The study published in Smart Materials and Structures creates and demonstrates a novel method in which ultrasonic waves are used to carefully position millions of tiny reinforcement fibres as part of the 3D printing process. The fibres are formed into a microscopic reinforcement framework that gives the material strength. This microstructure is then set in place using a focused laser beam, which locally cures the epoxy resin and then prints the object.

To achieve this the research team mounted a switchable, focused laser module on the carriage of a standard three-axis 3D printing stage, above the new ultrasonic alignment apparatus.

Tom Llewellyn-Jones, a PhD student in advanced composites who developed the system, said: “We have demonstrated that our ultrasonic system can be added cheaply to an off-the-shelf 3D printer, which then turns it into a composite printer.”

The coating by the Rice lab of chemist James Tour may be an effective real-time de-icer for aircraft, wind turbines, transmission lines and other surfaces exposed to winter weather, according to a new paper in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.

In tests, the lab melted centimeter-thick ice from a static helicopter rotor blade in a minus-4-degree Fahrenheit environment. When a small voltage was applied, the coating delivered electrothermal heat – called Joule heating – to the surface, which melted the ice.

The nanoribbons produced commercially by unzipping nanotubes, a process also invented at Rice, are highly conductive. Rather than trying to produce large sheets of expensive graphene, the lab determined years ago that nanoribbons in composites would interconnect and conduct electricity across the material with much lower loadings than traditionally needed.
