The iCar Project

The iCar Project:

parislemon:

Daisuke Wakabayashi on the Apple Car project:

The go-ahead came after the company spent more than a year investigating the feasibility of an Apple-branded car, including meetings with two groups of government officials in California. Leaders of the project, code-named Titan, have been given permission to triple the 600-person team, the people familiar with the matter said.

As noted on Twitter a few days back, this is basically the worst-kept secret in Silicon Valley. There are more people working on this project than almost every startup out here. That’s hard to keep under wraps, especially when you have to meet with government/regulatory folks, so assume Apple is just aiming to keep *details* of the project under wraps.

No matter what leaks out and what doesn’t, I am hyped to see what Apple can do with a car. They have tremendous potential to radically change the way we transport and/or commute.

"Its touchscreen feels worse than..."

"Its touchscreen feels worse than...":

parislemon:

Joanna Stern:

Not that I wanted to use the screen to navigate through apps anyway. The $55K Corvette may be a state-of-the-art car, but its touchscreen feels worse than what you’d find on the back of an airplane seat. And at times the system turned sluggish. (This experience makes me understand why Apple would consider building a car of its own.) General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet brand, which builds the Corvette, said too much screen sensitivity can be a safety concern and it is working to improve the user experience all around.

As good as Apple may or may not make the software experience with CarPlay, they can’t control the hardware side of the equation – unless then make their own car. This is the Rokr before the iPhone.

Apple’s definitely going to make a car. Whether they’re going to sell one to the public is a little more questionable, but honestly something that I think is inevitable at this point.

The self driving car future

This is Google's latest self-driving car prototype, and it looks incredible.

I am so excited for this future. Driving is an incredibly stressful and time consuming activity, and humans are awful at it. Plus, can you imagine how wonderful services like Uber will be? Order up a self driving car, and it's there in a few minutes, even if nobody else wants to take your route. There will be no reason to own a car anymore, and that's perfect.
