npr:

Starting Oct. 6, Egg McMuffins, hotcakes, hash browns and more will be available all day at McDonald’s.

On Tuesday, the company officially approved the decision to offer breakfast items all day at its more than 14,000 U.S. locations, which generally stopped selling the menu items around 10:30 or 11 a.m. The restaurant giant has been testing the all-day breakfast plan at select locations in the U.S. since this spring, and based on the results, franchises voted in favor of expanding the offering.

McDonald’s USA President Mike Andres is optimistic the expansion could revitalize McDonald’s drooping sales.

techcrunch:

Hoverboard Technologies created a skateboard-like vehicle that, despite it’s name, doesn’t levitate. Instead, it uses gyroscopes like a Segway to help you balance with your feet on either side of one giant rollerblade-style wheel in the center. Hoverboard Technologies came out of stealth today with a preview video, and will go live on Kickstarter on September 17 for around $4,000, shipping next year.

Click here to watch our full demo of this “hoverboard.”

panicatthedisco: I’ve been using Panic! At The Disco as a...

panicatthedisco:

I’ve been using Panic! At The Disco as a creative catalyst for over 10 years now. That fact seems so bizarre and yet so fitting. It’s such a part of me that I can’t picture what my life would’ve been like without this amazing journey so far.

Making “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out” was the album of “firsts” for me. First time I played a real part in a band. First time I lived away from home for longer than a few days. First time in a recording studio. First time writing and recording a full album. First time being the singer of a band.

Even after 10 years, it doesn’t seem so far away. The memories I associate with that time don’t seem so distant. I remember the bed I slept in. The smell of the instruments in the studio. The anxiety that nearly incapacitated me throughout the recording process. The hole in the apartment wall about the size of my foot.

Thinking of it all, I just want to say thank you. Thank you all for letting me do what I do. For letting me take you on this weird, wild trip with me. And so here’s to you and to 10 years of a fever I may never be able to sweat out. And I hope I never do.

Brendon Urie
Panic! At The Disco

Wow. Fever is 10 years old today. I am old.

Eatsa is a new restaurant designed around technology. There are neither lines nor cashiers. You order on an iPad, your name comes up on a transparent LCD screen box, and you pull out a bowl of quinoa. Eventually, Eatsa hopes its combination of tech and quinoa can change the way we eat through accessibility and speed.

Eatsa opens today in San Francisco at 121 Spear Street.

Here's how hydrogen could transform battery life on your portable gadgets

Here's how hydrogen could transform battery life on your portable gadgets:

mindblowingscience:

A British startup claims to have solved the perennial problem of smartphone battery life, and it’s used hydrogen to do it. Based on a prototype that Intelligent Energy has hooked up to a current iPhone 6, the new technology could mean a phone that lasts a week between charges rather than scraping through to the end of the day.

What makes the innovation particularly promising is that the new battery fits inside an iPhone 6 without any alterations in size or design - the only noticeable difference is a series of small vents on the back of the handset that allow small plumes of water to escape (a consequence of the controlled chemical reaction going on inside the battery). That water, together with a small amount of heat, are the only waste products from the new battery design.

Everybody has a different answer to how we’re going to solve the battery technology problem, and this one involves hydrogen.

Whoever can patent and market a successful battery technology revolution solution is going to be very rich and influential.

(via Watch this self-healing material handle a bullet)

NASA-funded research has created a material that could self-heal in seconds. Two layers of solid polymer sandwich a gel that with an ingredient that solidifies on contact with air (i.e. when one or both of the outer layers is damaged). This differs from other approaches that rely on a mostly-liquid compound, or similar, slower techniques. The protective applications in space craft (like the ISS) are obvious, and could add a vital line of defense against dangerous debris. The ISS already has shields to protect it, but reactive armour in the event of damage would be even more reassuring. Back down here on earth, the same material could be used in cars, pips, containers and even phones (beyond scratches). Watch the material get shot and self-heal in the video…

This is so cool.

techcrunch:

According to a new study from Adobe, 42% of Americans use their time there to check their email in the bathroom.

91% of respondents said they check email at work and 87% check their work email at home and 70% check their email while watching TV. About half the respondents said they check their email in bed and while on vacation and — somewhat worryingly — 18% check their email while driving.

Email will remain a valuable marketing channel for the time being. If anything, is not nearly as dead as many of us would like it to be.

Read more about these email facts here

But we really need to kill email…

Tagging System

materialsscienceandengineering:

materialsscienceandengineering:

Since this blog has, somehow, reached 400 followers (thank you all so much, I never expected this kind of interest!) I thought I’d mention to all of you that I’m working on updating my tagging system.

So, now’s your chance to have some input (any time is fine really but this is probably just the only time I’ll publicly ask). Let me know if there’s any specific tag you want me to start using (whether to avoid it or find it later), or if there are any current tags that you don’t understand or feel are unnecessary.

And, as always, I’m open to suggestions on general topics you want me to post more of, regardless of how they’re tagged.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

For example, I’ve used both Scanning Electron Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscopy so I’m trying to choose only one tag and make things easier to find.

On a related note, does anyone even use my tags?

I’ve found that using every possible relevant tag increases exposure to non-followers, which helps increase followers in turn. I mean, you do you, but I prefer to tag like it’s my job.

randdmag:

Authored by Greg Watry, www.rdmag.com

Though capable in laboratory settings of achieving 25% efficiency, commercially produced silicon solar cells typically reach levels between 13% and 14%.

Challar V. Kumar, of the Univ. of Connecticut’s Dept. of Chemistry, unveiled an edible and digestible light antenna capable of increasing the efficiency of commercial solar panels. He presented his findings at the 250th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society.

Simply put, the process uses an edible protein (bovine serum albumin) and mixes it with a fatty acid from coconut oil. When warmed, the combination forms a gel, made up of around 95% water. The gel is mixed with four dye molecules, allowing the substance to absorb the blue, green and yellow regions of the solar spectrum and emit in the red region. Thus, low-energy photons can successfully be used for electrical currents.

Read more: http://bit.ly/1FgocGx

I mean, this is cool, but I feel like this is a solution to a problem that we don’t really have… People aren’t skipping solar because it’s “not efficient.”
