Citing Gender Bias, State Lawmakers Move To Eliminate 'Tampon Tax'
npr:
“Women’s health has been misunderstood and neglected throughout history,” Rep. Melissa Sargent, a Democrat from Madison, told NPR. “Some women are ashamed of their period,” she said, adding that she feels the reluctance to talk about it has prevented the issue from gaining more momentum in state legislatures.
That’s why she’s sponsored a bill that calls for lawmakers to exempt feminine hygiene products from the state sales tax.
Holy shit. These are taxed? I figured in states that have tax free items, these would be tax free…

At 46 years old, Oliver Bogler’s reaction to a suspicious lump in his chest might seem typical for a man. He ignored it for three to four months, maybe longer. “I couldn’t really imagine I would have this disease,” Bogler says. But when he finally “grew up” and went to the doctor, he was pretty quickly diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.
Now what’s interesting here is that Bogler is a cancer biologist who regularly works with cancer cells, as senior vice president of academic affairs at the University of TexasMD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Even so, he figured the lump was a benign swelling of breast tissue.
And he had good reason to think so. Breast cancer is rare among men. Only 1 percent of all breast cancer cases are in men. Still, that means about 2,600 men receive a diagnosis of breast cancer every year.

Breast cancer is far more deadly in men than in women. It’s nothing to joke about.

rey’s not a skywalker … or a kenobi … she’s a woods
Why is everyone so upset about this? Rey is not Luke. Rey is a character we’ve never seen before. She might be the strongest person with the force ever; we don’t know.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens revolves around the story of staff-wielding scavenger Rey.
(That’s hardly a spoiler; she’s front-and-center in the movie poster, after all.)
But in the world of Star Wars toys, Rey’s been hard to find — and fans took to social media, under the hashtags #WheresRey and #WhereisRey, to complain about all the movie merchandise that left her out.
Target’s Star Wars figurine 6-pack? Finn, Chewbacca, Poe, Kylo Ren and two unnamed characters: a Stormtrooper officer and a First Order TIE fighter.
Central heroine: Nowhere in sight.
Bedspread? No Rey. Disney store display? No Rey. Barnes and Noble bobbleheads? No Rey. Walgreen’s shelves? No Rey.
In some of the Rey-less displays, her products might not have been stocked by individual stores — or may have sold out.
But in many other cases, toys featuring her simply hadn’t been released.
